Tight hamstrings may show through the dog roaching the spine or not being able to bow as deeply as one would like. To help this in the beginning, you may lift the front feet onto a low box when performing the bow. As the hamstring flexibility increases, start to remove the box, and place the front feet on a low foot target on the ground.

Aim to place your treat/reward between the wrists and elbow of the front legs to encourage a full stretch and rotation in the shoulders by getting the elbow joint in front of the shoulder joint.

Look to getting the front legs parallel to the ground.

Muscles Worked

The Bow is a fantastic way to exercise and stretch the shoulder for improved mobility and range of motion. We particularly target the muscles around the shoulder blade and the rear of the front leg along with stretching out the latissimus dorsi (large back muscles).

Many working dogs tend to have tightness in this part of the shoulder area but because this exercise forms part of dynamic or active stretching, you are not only stretching and increasing flexibility in the muscles, but also strengthening them. Strength comes from the dog having to use and control the muscles to create the movement and range – unlike passive stretching where the handler stretches a limb to stretch out a muscle while the dog is relaxed.

Because the stretch is active, you also target the latissimus dorsi muscle (the big triangular muscle that lies along the back, just behind the shoulders, along the rib cage and joins into the fascia along the loin and connects onto the top of the pelvic/hip bone (iliac crest). The Lats can only be activated through muscle activation via pressure, so this is an excellent exercise to strengthen and stretch the Lat muscles in the back.

Strengthening of the Lats and hamstrings are important for deceleration in sport. This helps improve mobility for sport dogs but also for senior dogs.

As many sport and senior dogs tend to be tight in these areas, improving mobility through the shoulder, latissimus dorsi and hamstring muscles via dynamic/active range of motion stretches is extremely helpful for maintaining excellent quality of life.

Signs of fatigue

The appearance of “happy feet” where the feet start to move around.

Some avoidance of moving into a bow, i.e. front feet start stepping backwards.

Rear legs may start to compensate by dropping the butt and bending the knees.

loss of posture, especially in the spine with a soft top-line.

Progression

Once your dog has good movement and posture when executing the bow and has developed the strength to do this through at least 2 sets of 7 – 10 repetitions, your dog will show good strength in the execution of this exercise.
