This movement also engages the core and lower back while working the shoulder stabilizers.

We are asking the dog to step off the rear foot platform with one leg – the leg remaining on the platform must lower the body with control and then lift that bodyweight back up again to place the lowered foot back up onto the platform while keeping their front feet stationary on the front foot target. By keeping the front feet stationary, the shoulder stabilizers must engage, and the core must control the weight shift from left rear foot to right rear foot along with controlling the single leg squat movement.

The leg remaining on the platform while executing the exercises is the leg having to perform the more demanding work.

Performing the Exercise

While standing with front feet and rear feet on an elevated platform, ask your dog to step down with ONE REAR FOOT ONLY off the rear platform and then to bring that rear foot from the ground back up onto the rear platform. Repeat this exercise 5 – 10 times on the one side only and then perform the same thing on the other side of the body.

Once your dog is familiar with this movement after at least 3 – 4 sessions, perform the exercise by executing alternate legs as one repetition i.e. left split-squat and right split-squat is one repetition.

Do not rush the exercise but be mindful of performing each step to each side.

Watchpoints

Watch that the dog is not “falling to the side” but rather lowering their rear leg straight down to the ground. “Falling to the side” may be observed through excessive tilting of the pelvis and placing the rear foot far from the rear elevated platform.

If the rear elevated platform is too high too soon, the dog may not have the leg strength to control a steep decent and will tilt their pelvis and “fall to the side” of the rear platform. This will place much strain on the leg remaining on the platform and the leg being lowered to the ground.

To get back up on top of the platform will then place strain on the pelvis and knee of the leg that remains on the platform due to the excessive angle. Your dog would be working muscle that is not yet strong enough to raise the body back up onto the platform with one leg.

The risk for injury is much greater if you are progressing too fast and your dog has not achieved the required strength in the muscles and tendons around the joints to support the movement.

When the rear elevated platform istoo high the dog will tilt their pelvis as described above and muscles required to work in the back legs, do not engage correctly to control the lowering or lifting of the leg that is supposed to target the ground. The rear foot target should be no higher than the hock at maximum progression stage.

Movement of the FRONT feet should be minimal or stationary. Too much movement of the front feet is an indicator that the rear platform is too high (too difficult) OR that the front foot elevated platform is too high, placing too much weight onto the back legs and the dog needs to compensate and weight shift by moving the front feet.

If your dog is unable to perform the exercises slowly and in a controlled manner –
