For this reason, we really need to look after the shoulder area and keep it strong as this area has a high injury rate.

By keeping the shoulders and surrounding areas (deltoideus, triceps, biceps, pectorals) including the foreleg, toes and wrists strong, you are providing increased support to the shoulder and its connective tissues when:

turning at speed (changing direction)

jumping off an object or landing from an elevated surface

decelerating

during sporting performances or working tasks.

Landing from a jump may increase the force placed on the front legs and shoulders by 3 – 5 times that of the body weight of the dog. Now imagine the impact the front end and shoulders must deal with after a single agility performance or training session, or stopping on cue during obedience training, decelerations required in retrieve work with a dumbbell or jumping onto a flyball box to get the ball.

That has a lot of impact. But we can get muscles stronger to help carry that load.

Main Muscles of the Forelimb

Below is a labelled diagram of the main muscle areas in the forelimb and shoulder. We concentrate on the lats (Latissimus dorsi), traps (Trapezius), delts (Deltoideus), biceps, triceps, deep pectorals, and that big neck muscle (brachiocephalicus)

The Hind End

The hind end consists of the rear legs, hips and pelvis.

The hind end is the engine providing forward power to the body, while the front end provides more steering for direction.

It is important to keep the hind end strong while protecting and stabilizing the joints for optimal support.

We need to ensure that the stabilizers surrounding the hips and knees are strong and that the large motor/moving muscles have enough sustained power in them to complete the tasks, sports performances ahead.

Main Muscles of the Hind Limb

Below are diagrams showing the main muscles of the inside and outside of the hind leg (Pelvic Limb)

We concentrate on the glutes (bum muscles), the groups of muscles that make up the hamstrings (Semimembranosus, Semitendinosus, Biceps Femoris), the groups of muscle that make up the quads and hip flexors (Tensor Fasciae Latae, Sartorius, Vastus Lateralis, Rectus Femoris) abductors and adductors (including Gracilis and Pectineus)

Trunk

The trunk area of the dog covers the area between the shoulders and the hips. This area is made up of muscles that lie on top of the spine (epaxial muscles) and those that lie just underneath the spine (hypaxial muscles)

Epaxial muscles help the spine extend and arch the spine while hypaxial muscles help the spine flex.

An important section of hypaxial muscles is those that lie below the lumbar spine (the area of the waist or loin). These muscles connect the hip and pelvis to the front half of the body. The iliopsoas group of muscles are the only muscle that attaches the hind legs to the spine.

The iliopsoas is responsible for moving the thigh forward, lifting the thigh towards the body and helps rotate the thigh outward (similar to when a male dog lifts his leg to pass urine).

The iliopsoas muscles form a large muscle group and have a huge role in controlling the core of the dog during sport. It helps bridge the front half of the dog to work in unison with the back half of the dog.

Muscles Groups Running along the Spine

Below are diagrams showing the various muscle groups that help stabilize the spine along with the muscles that form the iliopsoas and where they are situated.

["post-9533","tva_lesson","type-tva_lesson","status-publish","hentry","tva_courses-bk-9-foundational-strength-program","post-wrapper","thrv_wrapper
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
